On January 7, 1988, the State Council approved the establishment of Yangjiang City (prefecture-level). Yangjiang County was revoked, and Yangxi County (in Zhizhi Town), Jiangcheng District and Yangdong District were established. Yangjiang City has jurisdiction over Yangxi County, Jiangcheng District, Yangdong District and Yangchun County of Jiangmen City.


On June 22, 1991, the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved (Minxing Approval No. [1991] No. 19) agreed to revoke Yangdong District of Yangjiang City and establish Yangdong County, where the county people's government stationed in the east.


On May 5, 1994, the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved (Minxing Approval [1994] No. 67) agreed to revoke Yangchun County and establish Yangchun City.


In 2000, according to the data of the fifth national census: the total population of Yangjiang City was 2168904; 538069 people in Jiangcheng District, 380272 people in Yangxi County, 409982 people in Yangdong County, and 840581 people in Yangchun City.


As of December 31, 2002, Yangjiang City has jurisdiction over 1 municipal district, 2 counties, and 1 county-level city, with 7 streets, 48 towns, 704 village committees, and 100 neighborhood committees.


As of December 31, 2005, Yangjiang City had jurisdiction over 1 municipal district and 2 counties, and hosted 1 county-level city, with 11 streets and 39 towns.
